Free School Meals

Free school meals are available to children whose parents are in receipt of one or more of the following benefits:

  • income support
  • income-based job seeker’s allowance
  • income-related employment and support allowance
  • child tax credit with an income of less than £16,190 and not in receipt of working tax credit
  • support under part VI of the immigration and asylum act 1999
  • guarantee element of state pension credit.

Where parents are entitled to working tax credit during a four week “run on” period immediately after their employment has ceased, or after they have started to work less than 16 hours per week, their children are entitled to free school meals.

Children who receive income support or income based jobseeker’s allowance in their own right are also entitled to free school meals.

Should you meet the above criteria, you can apply by using the application form in the useful downloads section.

Applications are usually processed the same day. If your child is entitled to free school meals you will receive a letter confirming the date when the meals will start. The school is also notified that your child is entitled to free school meals. In the meantime, you should continue to pay for free school meals until confirmation comes through. Schools may be able to arrange a reimbursement of any monies paid whilst your entitlement is being confirmed. If you are not entitled to free school meals you will be notified in writing.

Information about Free School meals

Our school meals follow a healthy-eating policy.

The school has a well-equipped kitchen where school meals are cooked. Parents are welcome, by prior arrangement, to try a school meal. Menu lists are sent to parents at the start of each term or available here. Vegetarian or other special dietary requirement alternatives are available upon request.

We ask parents who provide a packed lunch for their child to support the school’s work on Healthy Eating by discussing ‘healthy’ options with their child and ensure that the lunchbox’s contents are appropriately healthy. Please include a ‘still’ drink (in a plastic bottle or cardboard carton) with a packed lunch, as fizzy drinks may be very high in sugar content and also, as carbonated, are not good for the child’s teeth. Packed lunches are eaten in the hall with those pupils having school lunches.

North Yorkshire Healthy Schools Team have created a ‘Healthy Packed Lunch’ leaflet, which helps to support healthy choices. Healthy-Packed-Lunch-leaflet

North Yorkshire County Caterers provide our school meals. They have a commitment to providing high-quality, nutritious meals using local produce, whenever possible.

Meals are required to be paid for weekly through our online system, Arbor.  Details of the current cost of a school meal are available from the School Office. Any payments not used, i.e. due to illness, etc. are credited to the child’s account.

All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are eligible for a free school meal at lunchtime.

When we have special celebratory meals, e.g. for Christmas and other festivals or events, pupils who normally bring a packed lunch are invited to join in and just pay for the single school meal.

Snacks and Drinks at School

The school participates in the National School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme, which provides fresh fruit and vegetables for the children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 every day.

At morning playtime there is a ‘Healthy Snack Shop’ which sells toast, bagels, crumpets and ciabatta as well as fresh fruit juices.

Milk
We are part of the EU School Milk Scheme, which provides milk daily for all children under the age of five. Parents of children over the age of five may purchase milk at a subsidised price. Further details are available from the School Office. Parents are asked to pay for this every term in advance.

Water
Children are encouraged to drink water throughout the day, they can refresh their water bottle at any time from the cold water fountain.
