Mental Health and Well-being

National Nurturing Schools Award

In 2025 Sheriff Hutton Primary school was awarded a Nurture Award. It means our school has been assessed against a set of standards for a nurturing school, covering three main areas: Stakeholders, Delivery, and Leadership & Management, and is a model of high-quality nurturing practice.

The NNSA stated “There is a huge commitment to well being here, it is next level nurture , this small school is an integral part of the community but that doesn’t mean its horizons are narrow.”
Mrs Pearson SEND lead said “We are incredibly proud of this achievement, the assessment was thorough and it really has highlighted our strengths as a school. We know all our children so well and we want so support their well being and mental health. We have therefore adopted a programme that we teach every week to support this right from Nursery to Year 6”

We recognise that children’s mental health is a crucial factor in their overall well-being and can affect their learning and achievement. All children go through ups and downs during their school career and some face significant life events.

In September 2021, our school took advantage of the training offered by the Department of Education and appointed a Senior Mental Health Leader. They completed their training with THRIVE.

Senior Mental Health Leader: Jon Fewlass.

Our role in school is to ensure that children are able to manage times of change and stress, and that they are supported to reach their potential or access help when they need it. We also have a role to ensure that children learn about what they can do to maintain positive mental health, what affects their mental health, how they can help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues, and where they can go if they need help and support.
Our aim is to help develop the protective factors which build resilience to mental health problems and to be a school where:

  • All children are valued and know that they are all unique.
  • Children have a sense of belonging and feel safe.
  • Children feel able to talk openly with trusted adults about their problems without feeling any stigma.
  • Positive mental health is promoted and valued.

We offer different levels of support:

Universal Support– To meet the needs of all our pupils through our overall ethos and our wider curriculum. For example developing resilience for all.

Additional support– For those who may have short term needs and those who may have been made vulnerable by life experiences such as bereavement.

Targeted support– For pupils who need more differentiated support and resources or specific targeted interventions such as well-being groups or personal mentors
